Children of a Lesser God is a 1986 American romantic drama. An energetic new teacher, James Leeds (William Hurt), arrives at a school for the deaf and hard of hearing in New England. He soon sees a young deaf woman Sarah Norman (Marlee Matlin) working as a janitor. James pursues her and she eventually agrees to go to dinner. The relationship between James and Sarah develops. Sarah does not want to vocalize, and James eventually agrees not to try to force her. The tension of learning how to stay connected in-between the world of silence and the world of sound is observed throughout the film.
